Jean-Claude Peiré: the mystery of a pop ceramicist
Some makers leave a large body of work and no biography. Jean-Claude Peiré, better known by his signature J.C. Peiré, is one of those 1980s French ceramicists whose pieces are known while almost nothing is known about the man who made them.
Born in 1943, he died in 2025. After studying at the Beaux-Arts, he set up his offices and workshops in the former "Le Régence" cinema, boulevard de Saint-Marcel in Marseille, at the turn of the 1980s. He left a body of work with a rare formal consistency, which has stayed largely off the radar of design history.
