Death mask of Napoleon Bonaparte after Antommarchi, 19th century.
On 7 May 1821, forty hours after Napoleon's death on Saint Helena, his personal physician, the Corsican doctor Francesco Antommarchi, took an impression of his face. In 1833 he launched a subscription to publish the mask in bronze and plaster, cast by Richard and Quesnel in Paris. Only five life-size bronze casts were made, with examples held at the Louvre and the Musée Carnavalet.
